SISTER Mildred Morrissey, CSJP, 1930-2013

Sister Mildred Morrissey, CSJP, a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace, died on March 22, 2013.

Mildred Janet Morrissey was born on March 14, 1930 in Sheridan Oregon. She was the daughter of James and Mary Mildred Morrissey, one of seven girls. Mildred and her twin sister, Mary, lost their mother at the time of their birth. In 1944 she and her twin sister moved to Seattle to join their older sister, Betty, who was living at St. Teresa's Residence for women, administered by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace. As a result of the kindness of the sisters at St. Teresa's, Mildred entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace in Bellingham, WA in 1951. Sister Mildred professed her perpetual vows in 1956.

She received a B.A. in Education from Ft. Wright College in Spokane and Washington State LPN certification. From 1955 to 1969, Sister Mildred was a teacher at St. Joseph School, Nelson, B.C., St. Michael School, Trail, B.C., St. Margaret and St. Therese School in Seattle. Mildred also served as a practical nurse at St. Anthony Hospital, Wenatchee, St. John Medical Center, Longview, and at the Josephinum retirement residence in Seattle. Since 1986, she has lived at St. Mary-on-the-Lake in Bellevue, WA-- first serving on the nursing staff and as office receptionist and later in retirement with prayer and hospitality as her focus.

Sister Mildred, or "Millie", as she was affectionately called, was known for her warm smile and sense of humor. She had a joke or riddle for every occasion! At her 50th Jubilee, Sister Mildred reflected, "As I ponder these past years I realize how many blessings I have received and am grateful to God."

Sister Mildred is survived by her sisters Dorothy, Alice, Harriet and Mary as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Betty and Catherine.

The Vigil Service will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 7:00 p.m at St. Mary-on-the-Lake Chapel in Bellevue, WA. The Funeral Mass will also be at St. Mary-on-the-Lake on Wednesday, March 27th at 11:00 am. Burial will be on Thursday, March 28th at 10:00 am at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace Retirement Fund, P.O. Box 248, Bellevue, WA 98009
