Luis Lumapas Batayola, Sr. Obituary (1948

June 21, 1925 - November 25, 2011 Luis was born in Fort Stotsenburg, Philippines to Ramona and Melecio Batayola. He was a WW II veteran. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering with honors from FEATI University, Manila, Philippines. Luis married Dolores Ignacio in 1952 and raised a family. In 1969, political and economic turmoil persuaded him to immigrate with his family to Seattle to join his siblings, Filomena and Felipe. The dream of being a Boeing engineer was dashed when Boeing lost the supersonic transport contract and Seattle went into a deep recession. A man who took on challenges and persevered, Luis retrained as a plumber, eventually succeeding as a steamfitter/mechanical systems engineer at Harborview Hospital (UW). After retirement in 1987, Luis and Dolores enjoyed a combination of studying and travelling (mostly pilgrimages). They also doted and guided their five grandchildren. Luis was a devoted Catholic and a pious man. In the Philippines, he was Master of Ceremonies for Adoracion Nocturna, an association of devout Catholic men, and actively served at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish church and sang with the parish choir as a tenor. He was an active member of Citizens League for Good Government in Pasay City. In Seattle, after retirement, he and his wife were daily communicants at St. Catherine's Parish where he served as a Sacristan, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Presider. For over two decades, he helped coordinate the devotional movement to Our Lady of Fatima and the rosary started in 1982 by the late Fr. Manuel Ocana of Immaculate Conception Church. In his later years, he became a regular attendee at Immaculate Conception, the church that first welcomed his family to this country. A good husband and family man, Luis will always be loved and remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Dolores, daughters Teresita (Dionnie Dionisio), Maria, and son Luis Jr. (Martine Koban), grandchildren James, Gabriela, Isabelle, Ariana, and Amelia. He is also survived by siblings Teresita Guzman and Nadette Velasco, and brothers Augustin, Vicente, Eduardo, Teodoro, and many close relatives and friends. The family is grateful to everyone who prayed for and took care of him. Viewing will be on Friday, December 2nd at 10 am, the Recitation of Rosary will be at 10:30 AM, and the Funeral Mass at 11 AM ALL at Immaculate Conception Church, 820 18th Avenue, Seattle. Reception to follow at the Jean Moran Hall then interment at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline.
