Harrison "Wimpy" Pembroke Sargent, Jr. Obituary (1934 - 2022)

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the loss of our dear husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Wimpy Sargent. He passed away during the night with his wife of 49 years, Marilyn, at his side in his Seattle home. He will be missed by all those he touched in his roles as family man, dear friend, insurance expert, golfer, and artist. Wimpy Sargent was born December 7th, 1934, in Seattle, and was the only child of Elizabeth Cotton Sargent and Harrison Pembroke Sargent. He grew up in the Broadmoor neighborhood and was an avid basketball player and golfer. He graduated from Lakeside High School and attended both Stanford University and the University of Washington; he played on the golf team at both universities. Wimpy was a member in the Psi Upsilon Fraternity at the University of Washington. After graduating from the University of Washington he went to work at United Pacific Insurance Company before joining his dad at Sargent Company, which later merged with Maier & Sargent and was ultimately purchased by Alexander & Alexander. With good friend Louis A Wohlman and his wife Marilyn they opened Wohlman & Sargent, Inc. Wimpy was part of the group of insurance professionals that initiated, funded, and underwrote the original Medic-One unit. When the firm was sold in 1988 Wimpy retired at the age of 54, joking that "working was very overrated." He set about enjoying his many passions which included golf, art, spending winters on Maui, and enjoying his close circle of family and friends. With his first wife Patricia Lane Sargent (deceased,) Wimpy was blessed with two children: Curtis (deceased,) and Kathleen Anderson, (Peter, deceased.) He leaves behind two granddaughters, Jessica Sargent Garrett (Scott), and Katianne Anderson. Wimpy had three great-grandsons: Curtis, Caleb, and Colton Garrett of Oceanside, California. Wimpy, along with wife Marilyn, embraced the roles of Grandparenting and Great-Grandparenting, and loved watching their family grow as the kids moved through the milestones of schooling, graduations, weddings, and new babies. He was very much looking forward to the upcoming wedding of his granddaughter Katianne to Dane Carlson in 2023. Wimpy had been a Sterling Member of the Columbia Tower Club, and an active member in both the Seattle Golf Club and the Maui Country Club. During his time in the Seattle Golf Club, he held the titles of Junior Club Champion, Club Champion, Senior Club Champion, and Super Senior Club Champion. He proudly joked that he had "shot his age," 101 times, beginning when he was age 70. But Wimpy's proudest golf memories were the tournaments he played in with his children, Curtis and Kathleen. He played in the World Father-Son Tournament many times in locations including Ireland, Spain, Vail, and many others. He and Curtis were the tournament champions in 1995 at Mijas Golf Club in Spain, and they placed First-Runners Up in the Ireland tournament. The Ireland adventure was a memorable family trip for wife Marilyn and daughter Kathleen as well. Wimpy loved serving as caddy for his lifelong friend Don Bies on the PGA and Senior PGA tours. Although Wimpy was known as a serious golfer with a great love of the game, his large circle of friends and golfing companions will miss his great sense of humor and outgoing personality. He had a true love for the game of golf and a love for people. In his youth, he had a talent for painting and drawing, and he resumed this hobby during his retirement. Many of his friends and family members cherish the pet portraits Wimpy created with so much love. He later advanced to drawing his golf buddies, family boats, and cabins. Wimpy was truly a man of great talents, and he had a great love for life and for his loved ones. The family will be forever grateful to his wife Marilyn for the devoted care she showed for Wimpy during his later years as he faced various health challenges. Donations in his memory can be sent to the University of Washington Men's and Women's Golf Teams, and Medic One. The family is planning a private memorial for Wimpy at a later date.
