Gillis August Schmidt Obituary (1924 - 2017)

Gillis August Schmidt Born April 6, 1924 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the only child of Harry and Theresa Schmidt. Gil passed away peacefully on November 22, 2017 after a short illness. He leaves behind his much-loved wife, Luella. They were 5 days shy of celebrating their 72nd wedding anniversary. Gil served in the Navy during WWII working as a baker. Upon leaving the Navy, he and Luella married and moved to Seattle where Gil started work as a baker at Langendorf Bakery in early 1946. After many years in the bakery, Gil was elected Business Agent in 1964, and later Financial Secretary Treasurer of Bakers, Local #9, serving in that capacity until his retirement in 1984. Always a strong union man, Gil served in many positions, including Secretary of the Western Conference, the Pacific Coast States Conference and on the General Executive Board at the international level. In addition to Luella, Gil leaves behind his two sons: Richard (Carole) and Keith (Beth). Loved by his granddaughters Kari Schmidt Cates of Tega Cay, SC, Kaye Schmidt Ramaekers of Shoreline and Kellie Frank of Waterford, CA. Great Grandpa Gil (GGG) took such joy in his great-grandkids: Oliver, Piper, Marley, Lauren "Beep" and Korie. Another great grandson will join the family in March. Recitation of the Rosary will be Wednesday, November 29th at 7 PM at Hoffner Fisher & Harvey 508 N 36th St, Seattle 98103. Funeral Mass will be Thursday, November 30th at 10:30 AM at Christ the King Church 401 N 117th St, Seattle 98133 Interment, Holyrood Cemetery.
