On March 17, 2026, we bid farewell to the beautiful, and compassionate Estella Scott, who was born in Hearne, Texas, on May 6, 1941. Her life was a testament to her creativity and sparkling sense of humor, love for her family and community, making her a beacon of joy and inspiration to all who knew her. Estella's contagious spirit and magnetic personality touched countless lives, leaving a profound legacy that will shine on in our hearts.
Estella was a woman of many talents and passions. She was a dedicated social worker and teacher, retiring in 2010 after a career working at Blackshere Schools in Hearne, Texas. Her dedication was evident in her academic pursuits, attending Seattle Central Community College then proceeding on to Western Washington for her Masters in Sociology where she was repeatedly on the deans list. Estella also attended cosmetology school although she could never master finger waves. Estella was also a dynamic force in her community, as an active member of the NAACP, participant in the Civil Rights Movement in Seattle and serving on the Hearne Beautification Committee. However, her true joy was found in her hobbies which were many. Estella loved to garden, where she nurtured all species of plants with as much love and care as she did the people in her life. Estella was also talented in sewing and fashion. She loved painting, and piano playing while sitting in the light of sunny picture window watching the people go by.
Despite her many achievements, what mattered most to Estella was instilling a legacy of integrity in everyone she encountered. Her community activism during the 1960s and 70s in California and Washington, as well as in her hometown of Hearne, Texas, was a testament to her commitment to raising a generation that was intelligent and courageous. She believed in the importance of loving oneself and knowing one's history, a mantra she carried throughout her life and passed on to her family and students.
Estella is survived by her children, Gregory Scott, Sharolyn Scott, and Surella DaSilva and her grandchildren, Iyana DaSilva, Isaiah Scott, Daniel Scott, Damien Scott, Tyree Lee-Scott, Josiah Scott, Rosalynn O’Guinn, Sharanna Horton Smith, Adilia Scott, Delaun DaSilva, and Jaquon DaSilva. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Saint Neal, Angel Neal, Island Scott, Rylan Scott, Jackson Scott, Austin Scott, and Avia Scott, Edward Smith, Keyana Smith, and Ty’Air Hortan as well as her daughters-in-law, Amanda Scott, Sharon Jones Huzzie, and Genesha Lee. Estella was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Debose, mother, Carrie Jackson, ex-husband, Tyree Scott, son, Tyree II, and granddaughter, Tanya Owens.
“Because of the Lord’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Estella's love and compassion were indeed endless, and they will continue to inspire us each day. Lamentations 3:22-23
Estella will later be interned in a private ceremony at Red Hill Cemetery alongside her mother.
