Sister Eileen Keane, CSJP Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace
Sister Eileen Keane, a beloved mentor to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, died on May 18th, 2018 at home in the Alicia Park neighborhood of Seattle.
Born in Seattle on October 14, 1924, Sister Eileen grew up in Seattle's Queen Anne community, where she first met the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace at St. Margaret School. She graduated from Holy Angels High School in 1942 and entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace just before her 21st birthday in 1945. She was named Sister Aloysius and missioned to teach in Seattle, Longview and Corvallis, but the Sisters soon recognized her gifts as a mentor and asked her first to teach and then to direct the community's novices. From 1955 to 1968, Sister Eileen led the novitiate, and was greatly loved for her gentle, wise and creative spirit.
Later Sister Eileen served as Assistant Provincial, as Administrator at the Josephinum Retirement Community, and as receptionist for PeaceHealth. Her retirement, at the time of her 50th Jubilee in 1995, was a time of continued loving ministry to her house community, family, CSJP Sisters, and many friends.
At the celebration of her 50th Jubilee, Sister Eileen said, "The CSJP Community was there to support, nourish and even challenge me during these fifty years. I am grateful for the many ways you have enriched my life. I feel fortunate to have walked the journey with you."
In her final journey, Sister Eileen was supported by her home companions, Sister Margaret Parry and Sister Ida Mary MacAulay; by her sister, Sally Keane, by many Sisters and loving friends, especially Pat Hogan, Elaina Stewart, Jim and Mary Parry, and Maegan Condit, and by her beloved dog, Toby.
