Daniel McMullen

–

Seattle, WA

Daniel B. McMullen passed away on Friday, Jan. 13, 2023. He was 88 years old.

Daniel "Dan" was born to Jim McMullen and Dorothy (McDonald) McMullen on Jan. 29, 1934. Born in the shadow of the Great Depression, Dan always remembered to treasure the small pleasures in life, such as eating chocolate as a child.

He was the oldest child of Jim and Dorothy. Four siblings would follow: Ronald "Ron", David, Mary Jane and Kathy. He married Dolores A. Beko on June 27, 1964. Not known for his punctuality, Dan almost missed seeing his beautiful bride as he was busy enjoying the hotel swimming pool, a story he would recount many times later over the years.

In 1978, the couple adopted two children, Danielle and David.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother and father, his wife, and siblings Mary Jane and David.

He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Danielle and Brian Harrison; son and daughter-in-law, David and Dawn McMullen; and grandchildren Alex Frost, and Baily, Chloe and Sadie McMullen, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Dan grew up in Seattle and New Halem, Washington, where he and brother Ron frequently went on hiking adventures, including one where they got lost in the woods and had to shelter overnight. The brothers also enjoyed many ski trips together as young men.

After graduating from Seattle Prep High School in 1952, Dan, always a devout Catholic, felt the Lord calling him into a life of service as a priest. He entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and attended Holy Rosary Scholastic in Ottawa, Ontario. However, sometimes there is a fork in the road and plans change. After several years of studying to become a priest, Dan left the seminary to pursue other dreams.

He earned a bachelor of science in engineering from Seattle University and began a long career with the city of Seattle. After his beloved wife died in 2006, Dan rededicated himself to the religious life, often attending three church services a day, participating in Eucharistic Adoration, and various church and prayer groups.

Dan also enjoyed gathering with family and friends whenever possible, he was particularly proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their activities. Even in his early 80s, Dan would still go on hikes. In 2021, he and Danielle traveled to Oahu, Hawaii, where he finally got to visit the Pearl Harbor Memorial site. He and son David spent a lot of time together and enjoyed various activities as well.

He was a friend to many and always had time to talk and share a kind word. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
