Clarence Glenn Henderson Obituary (1931 - 2023)

Clarence Glenn Henderson, born August 19, 1931 in Lansing MI, passed away peacefully on September 19, 2023 in Seattle, WA. Glenn, as he liked to be called, was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence, and Fern as well as his three sisters Virginia, Dottie and Judy. He is survived by his wife Joyce and three children, David (Ada) Henderson, Phyllis (Scott Davidson) Henderson, and Nancy (George Oakley) Henderson, adored grandchildren Brian, Megan, Matthew, Caleb, and Zachary as well as two great-grandchildren, and much-loved nieces, nephews and cousins. Growing up, Glenn's family were devout Seventh-day Adventists. He attended Adelphian Academy in Holly, MI, and Andrews University in Berrien Springs, MI. As a young man, he was seriously injured in a car accident, which killed his father and injured his mother. After a lengthy recovery, Glenn eventually found his way to Hinsdale Hospital where he met his future wife Joyce Jo Shinliever, who was in nurses training at the time. Glenn worked in the boiler room. After Glenn and Joyce married, he worked as an electrical engineer. While at BRK he worked on the development of the home smoke detector, which would receive a patent and end up in millions of homes. The legacy of that project saved innumerous lives. He worked his way into managing hospital facilities and made it back to Hinsdale Hospital (now UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale). He ended his professional career at Battle Creek Hospital in MI. Glenn and Joyce retired to Fountain Hills Arizona where they were members of the Camelback Seventh-day Adventist Church. Glenn sang in the choir and enjoyed the sunny weather and desert flora and fauna. They often spent summers in Washington with their daughters and son. Eventually, he and Joyce moved to Seattle to be closer to their children and grandchildren. In addition to being a loving father and husband, Glenn was a man of many talents. He was an engineer, builder, inventor, woodworker, and musician. He took the family camping, and on nature walks after church. He embodied integrity, honesty, and loyalty. He was gentle, and kind and was adored by his family. He will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 13th at Bayview Retirement Community Chapel 11 W Aloha, Seattle, WA 98119
