Caroline Robertson Obituary

Our Tribute to Our Mother

How can we distill the essence of a life well-lived?  Caroline Sylvia (Linebarger, Stacy) Robertson was born June 3,1922 to Raleigh Gale Linebarger and Lula Mildred (Schild) Linebarger in Havre, Montana. She grew up the daughter of a newspaper owner/editor and a well-traveled, educated social icon.

For brevity, we cover only a few important interests for Carol:  Education, Faith & Family, and Travel.

Education: She earned honors in high school and college, graduating with a BA in Business Administration and Psychology from the University of Montana in Missoula. She started a Teaching Assistantship in Psychology at the University of Minnesota but left it for marriage to Robert Edward Stacy. Later, she earned her Teaching Degree at Seattle Pacific College and taught in the Seattle Public School District for many years. In 1966, Carol pioneered in a new field, receiving her Master of Education in High School Counseling and Guidance at Washington State University. This dedicated educator urged her own four children to attend college and provided many educational outlets for them in their formative years. She was an avid reader and never stopped learning, serving through the Pacific Institute and the Soroptimist Society among other groups. She also partnered with her mother in offering a Journalism Scholarship at Northern Montana College, in honor of her father.

Faith and Family:  The Linebarger family were all active members of the United Presbyterian faith. As an adult, she served in Sunday School programs at West Side Presbyterian church in West Seattle. Later, she served as a deaconess and an elder in the University Presbyterian Church, participating in many short-term missionary trips. All her children were led to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ while hearing Bible stories and songs, sitting on her lap in the rocking chair. The children were enrolled in Seattle Christian School for their early training.

Travel:  As a high school business teacher and later school counselor, Carol led students on People to People trips to Europe, the Soviet Union, and later Eastern European countries. She explored England, France, Scotland and Wales, Germany, Hawaii, Nepal and Canada with her children and grandchildren. She met Mother Theresa in India and worked in her ministry. Mom taught ESL in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan and China, one of the first white people to visit and teach in China in the 1980’s after it reopened to Westerners. In her 70’s, she climbed Mt. Sinai on a trip to Egypt and Israel. Her last major trip, at 80 years, was to South Africa to visit Jamie and Amy Morrison, missionary grandchildren.

Asked once to sum up her life, Mom simply stated, “I am Carol, child of God, mother of 5.”
